![]() ![]() While many of Joyce’s contemporaries were resurrecting an awareness of bold and glorious mythological heroes in support of their political vision for the early 20th century, Joyce very deliberately incorporated mythological themes of mainly darkness and death into his texts. However, those who have written about this intersection do not seem to have attempted to discern what Joyce is saying, by way of these created linkages, about the Irish at large and about Dubliners in particular. ![]() ![]() Scholars of both Joyce and Irish mythology have previously described the perceived linkage between those two fields of study. The first three decades of Joyce’s life were witness to an intense revival of nationalism, to various movements towards political autonomy, and to efforts by leading men and women of Irish society to redefine a sense of national identity. However, Joyce, along with his literary and political contemporaries, did not exist in either a vacuum or a stasis and one can only rightly view Joyce’s unique perspective in the context of his times. ![]() If Joyce, in Dubliners, is offering a moral history of his countrymen, then he is also implicitly offering his perspective regarding who they are as a nation, for identity can hardly be separated from collective morality. Nuestra intención será mostrar la importancia de este entorno femenino en el relato de Joyce y cómo John Huston, en su adaptación cinematográfica de 1987 del mismo título, enriquece de forma magistral el relato de Joyce para insistir en el papel crucial que el escritor irlandés proporciona a la esfera femenina. Nos centramos en uno de sus relatos más conocidos y cuyo título sistematiza esta muerte espiritual, “The Dead”, incluido en su famosa colección de relatos Dubliners. Gilber y Susan Gubar o Carolyn Heilbrun atacan la misoginia desmesurada que encuentran en la obra de Joyce, este estudio saca a la luz la importancia que el irlandés otorga a la esfera femenina hasta el punto de sugerir que es en este ámbito, y no en el entorno patriarcal y canónico en el que se ha ubicado con frecuencia, donde se ofrece una verdadera alternativa de cambio y de vida a la muerte espiritual en la que el patriarcado y las instituciones que lo componen sumen a sus súbditos.
